Sustainably Harvested Fisheries
Sugiyo was founded on a reverence for the ocean and remains committed to protecting its health and that of its many inhabitants. Our support of environmentally responsible fishing practices and local fishing fleets is most evident in our use of wild-caught Alaska pollock as the key ingredient in all our surimi products.
Wild-caught Alaska pollock is one of the most naturally abundant fisheries in the United States. Its sustainability is closely monitored through strict management practices, which include annual population assessments, scientifically determined catch limits, and onboard catch observers.
All of the wild-caught Alaska pollock used to produce our surimi seafood products comes from waters that have been independently certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, a global non-profit organization engaged in setting standards for responsible fishery management.
Other partners include the Association of Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers (GAPP), a non-profit organization that raises awareness of the remarkable qualities of wild-caught Alaska pollock through education, sustainability advocacy, and industry collaboration.
Quality & Safety at Sugiyo
Sugiyo is dedicated to delivering the highest quality Surimi products to our customers. A cornerstone to our commitment to excellence is our certification by the Safe Quality Food (SQF) Institute, a globally recognized standard for food safety and quality. The SQF certificate requires rigorous audits of our operations and ensures that our surimi seafood has been produced and handled according to the highest standards of food safety and quality. Our SQF certification covers everything from record keeping and allergen management to storage procedures and staff training programs.
The SQF Institute is endorsed and backed by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). GFSI is a food industry initiative that acts as an umbrella organization that benchmarks and recognizes food safety standards while seeking to harmonize these programs across the global food supply chain. The union of these organizations along with Sugiyo’s meticulous approach to developing and producing our surimi seafood is your assurance of quality, safety and traceability.
Sugiyo USA is also a voluntary participant in the US Department of Commerce Seafood Inspection Program. Administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this program ensures the quality, safety and proper labeling of seafood products in the United States. Its voluntary inspections and certification verify that our products meet federal standards and consumer expectations and may include sensory evaluations, laboratory testing, and process audits.
